xACT

Audio files come in numerous formats, which serve various purposes. With so many formats out there, compatibility issues are not uncommon. You may also encounter audio files which are too large for a specific operation. Regardless of what problems you are experiencing with your audio files, xACT can help you fix most of them. It is a collection of encoders and decoders, based on various Unix applications. In addition, xACT offers other useful utilities, for splitting or joining files, editing their tags and much more.

The included tools are well sorted across several tabs. The encoding and decoding options can be found on separate tabs. You can load multiple audio files and set the application to decode them to AIFF or WAV format. xACT provides more options when it comes to encoding. The loaded files can be encoded to various lossless formats, like SHN, FLAC, APE and others. Encoding to lossy formats is another possibility.

Besides encoding and decoding, xACT can execute other operations as well, like splitting or joining files, trimming silent fragments and others. These are basic commands, executed by shntool, a multi-purpose WAVE processor. While the stand-alone version of shntool is operated through command lines, xACT allows you to execute them through its user interface, which is obviously much easier and faster.

There are many more useful tools to be found on xACT's interface. They allow you to edit tags, batch rename your audio files, extract tracks from CDs and much more. It is also possible to check audio files for inconsistencies and to generate and verify checksum files.
